Second only to Brazil in population and size, Argentina extends from the tropics in the north 2,300 miles to within 600 miles of Antarctica in the south. Her boasting includes the richest soil in the western hemisphere; one of the ten largest ports in the world; the largest beef exportation in the world; the widest avenue in the world; and the tallest mountain in the western hemisphere, among others. In spite of her wealth, abundant natural resources and potential for prosperity, a significant sector of society is locked in the grip of poverty, unemployment and underemployment.

Argentina is considered a medium-income nation, and continues to emerge from the 2001-2002 financial crisis, which proved financially devastating for both private industry and many citizens. Low salaries and unemployment spark organized demonstrations almost daily in metro Buenos Aires and frequently in other major cities. Protesters often block streets, highways and major intersections causing traffic jams and delaying travel.
